Crystal Monee Hall – ‘Live at the Living Room’
Crystal Monee Hall coasted through a one hour jam session that enthralled an intimate crowd of diverse music lovers Thursday (8/5/2010) night at the ‘Living Room’ located at 154 Ludlow Street on NYC’s Lower Eastside. Crystal’s Bluesy, Funk, Jazzy rhythms and earthy melodic tones captured the music souls of everyone who attended her jam session.
Each time Miss Hall belted out one of the amazing tracks from her newly released album ‘River Train’ the audience went wild with applause! Tracks such as her Jazz and Blues infused “In the Water”, “Damsel” and title track “The River Train” reminded me of blues and folk singing greats, Etta James and Odessa, and her tracks ‘If You Want Me To’, ‘Stay’ and ‘Home’ takes you on a musical journey through the garden of Phoebe Snow, Tracey Chapman and Diane Shuur. In addition, to these wonderful musical influences Miss Hall’s voice illuminates its way to your heart.
The former cast member of the hit Broadway play ‘Rent’, songbird styling’s was a breath of fresh air from all the programming enhanced musicians out here today pedaling the illusion of true musical artistry. Miss Hall epitomizes the true essence of a centered and spiritually driven artist.
Her soul filled lyrics are so honest and delivered so earnestly they make you feel like she’s sharing pages from her life story. Her personable manner with her audience and positive personality is sure to capture hordes of new fans. During our musical joyride, Miss Hall stated “Music has always been a part of my life.” Growing up singing in the church choir and watching her mother sing on Sundays, inspired and influenced her to become involved in music in school. She joined her school’s chorus and show choir as well as starring roles in her school’s musical theater. From there, she went on to directing the gospel choir at the University of Virginia (UVA), where she first started playing the piano and writing music. After hearing this unique musical genius in the making you wouldn’t believe she’s only been playing the guitar and writing songs a little over a year.
I suggest you do two things this summer, go purchase Crystal Monee’s new album ‘The River Train’ and find a venue showcasing this self proclaimed “church girl” born and bred on the James River Banks of Virginia, musical artistry, That guarantees you a musical experience you will never forget…..
